Not So Basic Guide to Wedding Dress Shopping

Last week we closed our two part series with a forward look into the bridal industry and the road to size inclusivity. Today we are chatting about Gigi's Bridal's favorite takeaways from our Thursday segments. Next Thursday we are bringing the water line down a bit and sharing how to navigate a cancelled wedding if you have already purchased your wedding gown. (Not to share any bad juju but in case you have a friend in need.)

Our videos and accompanying blogs are live every Thursday at 10 AM EST. To never miss a chat:

Focus on the Experience

Shopping for your wedding gown is not simply about investing in a gown; it’s about the experience and creating memories. Wedding dress shopping can be filled with lots of adrenaline and for some, mixed emotions. Approach your appointments with an emphasis on quality over quantity.  Developing a discerning taste will lead you to prioritize emotional connection over aesthetics. When wedding dress shopping, the joy lies not just in finding the right gown but in the emotions woven into the entire experience.  Focus on the environment, the craftsmanship of the gown, how the gown makes you feel, and the presence of your loved ones. Immerse yourself in the experience, and enjoy the moment.

Bonus Tip: Before taking pictures, take a few moments to take in the gown. Jumping to pictures can be distracting and interrupt your train of thought.

Have Honest & Open Conversations with Your Stylist

The key to a successful appointment is to have an honest and open conversation with your bridal stylist throughout your appointment. Sharing the vision of how you want to look and feel on your wedding day will give them the insight needed to select gowns that align with your inspiration.  Expect your stylist to occasionally suggest gowns that nudge you outside your comfort zone to unlock a window of possibilities . Don’t be shy to ask questions! We know this is a new experience and it is our duty to be sure you are empowered to make the best decision for you. Trust the process and your expert stylist.

Bonus Tip: Your bridal stylist is your advocate! Feeling overwhelmed is common. Communicate how you're feeling with your stylist so they can adjust the energy of the appointment accordingly.

Give Yourself Grace

Be mindful of how many appointments you are scheduling in a day; getting in and out of wedding dresses is physically tiring and you also may find the experience weighing on your mental wellbeing. If you need a break, take one! Don’t forget to hold space for yourself and remember that the right dress will make you feel like the most confident and beautiful version of you. We are all guilty of being critical of our bodies and highlighting what we wish we could change. Challenge yourself to reframe the way you talk about your body when wedding dress shopping. Instead of saying, "What do I want to cover up in my wedding dress?" try "What parts of my body do I want to show off and accentuate?"

Bonus Tip: Don’t let the timeline of ordering a wedding dress stress you and take away from the experience.  At Gigi’s Bridal, you can walk out the dress the same day you say yes to it. No wait, no stress!
